When you hear about a movie from Bill Kong, the producer of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, House of Flying Daggers, Hero and Fearless it’s only natural to expect a visually stunning film with moving music, top-notch cinematography and of course a boatload of martial arts action. However, in this case, add legendary actor Sammo Hung, Golden Horse best actor Award nominee Eddie Peng Yuyan and action Director Cory Yuen, along with film director Chow Hin Yeung to the project and you also get an immersive masterpiece based on historical events. The story is centered on the Rise of martial artist and folk hero, Wong Fei Hung, master of the Iron Wire Fist and Shadowless Kick. Yes, the story of Fei Hung has been told and retold before, but never as a cool and captivating character as played by Eddie Peng.
The film has several major elements working for it: A good story, well done action and fight choreography, stunning visuals, historic relevance and Sammo (did we already mention Sammo?).
Audience’s watching this film will quickly note that Eddie Peng’s performance as Chinese hero Wong Fei Hung is played with great confidence and charisma and will also see veteran Asian American Actor Byron Mann (Street Fighter, The Man With The Iron Fists) in his role as one of the four tigers in the Black Tiger Gang.
The story takes place in 1868 during the late Qing Dynasty at centers around the Huangpu sea port of Guangzhou (the only Chinese port open to foreign trade between 1757 and 1842) where two major factions battle it out in an ongoing turf war, the Black Tiger and Northern Sea gangs. The gangs are involved in multiple forms of corruption from opium smuggling to human trafficking that allows them to exploit their fellow Guangzhou countrymen and live lives of opulence while the workers live in total poverty and fear. Fear of repercussion from either gang, kidnapping, physical attack and fear of Sammo’s character, the ruthless and often malevolent godfather of the Black Tiger Gang, Lei Gong.
Lei Going wants total control of the port and will do anything necessary to get what he wants by first getting rid of the rival leader of the Northern Sea Gang. Fei Hung finds his way into the Black Tiger gang and begins a calculated plan to dismantle the gang and it’s works from the inside out by way of cunning, fists, feet and a sense of righteousness and invincible self sacrifice in helping the down-trodden. His (Fei Hung’s) plan combined with the help of other key players in this battle of right versus wrong sets the stage for epic battles with an intriguing plot that should definitely entertain and maybe even inspire movie viewers to RISE.
